FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is SwirlyMMS available on iPhone 3G through App Store?
A: No, it is not. At least not yet… We have submitted a couple of feature requests to Apple via Bug Reporter, which addresses technical obstacles that currently prohibits us from an App Store release. Time will tell if our voices were heard.

Q: Is SwirlyMMS available on jailbroken iPhone firmware 2.x through Cydia?
A: Yes, we released SwirlyMMS v1.2 on
Sep 16 2008 for the iPhone 3G and 2G running firmware 2.x! You download and install SwirlyMMS via Cydia on your jailbroken iPhone.

Q: How do I download and install SwirlyMMS?
A: Currently, you download and install SwirlyMMS via Installer or Cydia on jailbroken iPhones running firmware 1.x or via Cydia if you are running firmware 2.x

Q: After the installation, can I send and receive MMS right away?
A: Before you can send and receive MMS you must configure SwirlyMMS and ensure that you have MMS added to your service plan. Also, you must fetch the fully featured demo license or make a purchase.

Q: I do not know which settings to configure SwirlyMMS with?
A: You may find the settings specific for your Service Provider in our forum or here. Alternatively, you can request the settings to be sent to your iPhone over-the-air from your Service Provider or from any of the major cell phone makers like Nokia, Sony-Ericsson and Motorola. Just enter your phone-number and select a modern phone model (if iPhone is not listed) and they will send the MMS settings to your iPhone. Yet other alternatives are to check your Service Provider’s web pages for information or call their customer service department.

Q: I’m with AT&T and have heard that MMS should work after all, is that true?
A: Yes, it should work! However, it can be a bit tricky. Please read through these two threads att1 and att2 carefully.

Q: I’m with O2 in UK and have problems receiving MMSs. Can this be solved?
A: Yes, if you are with O2 in UK and have problems receiving you should definitely have a look in this thread!

Q: What restrictions are in the Demo license?
A: The only restriction is that it is time-limited. You are encouraged to try the application before you decide to buy. Therefore, fetch the fully featured demo license and try the application out in up to 14 days. If you like it and find it useful you are more than welcome to purchase SwirlyMMS.

Q: How do I buy SwirlyMMS?
A: You buy SwirlyMMS simply by pressing the Buy button in the Information screen from within SwirlyMMS. The purchase is made with your credit card over a secure connection via Paypal.

Q: I think SwirlyMMS is the most useful 3rd party application, App Store applications included, so why do you only charge $8?
A: Why not?

Q: I would like to donate, where have those donation links gone?
A: We pulled them off from our site since users used the donations links for the purchase, which caused a lot of manual work on our side, and some extra work and confusion for the donators. Also, since we now charge for the application you should not have to donate.

Q: If I upgrade the firmware, or make a full restore of the iPhone can I still use my already purchased license?
A: Yes, the license is tied to your iPhone device and will run on any 1.1.x and 2.x firmware.

Q: If I buy a new iPhone do I have to buy a new license?
A: Yes, the license is tied to your iPhone device.

Q: I have donated but have not received a full license, what should I do?
A: You should send us the special “PurchaseCode”, which SwirlyMMS generates for you on your iPhone. This can be done by first clicking the Get Demo button to fetch a demo license (if not already done), then click Buy button, read and accept the license agreements, click the Buy choice, which starts the Safari Web browser. Click the ‘+’-sign on the bottom and choose “Mail Link to this Page”, which starts the email application and then send it to: [email protected].
Also, you must include the email address you used with Paypal when you donated, alternatively include the Paypal Receipt-ID, in contrast to your private Transaction-ID!
When we have received this email, we will be able to create a full license, which you can fetch after having received a confirmation email from us.

Q: I have bought your application but have not received the full license?
A: Probably Paypal has not cleared your payment yet. Most often the payment gets cleared immediately but sometimes there can be a one- or two-hours lag. For some types of payments, like eChecks the payment can take several days before it gets cleared. As soon as the payment is cleared you will get a simple confirmation mail with instructions that you can activate your full license by first clicking the Buy button, followed by clicking Activate.

Q: My payment has been cleared but I have not received any confirmation mail and when I try to Activate I get an error message that says something failed
A: You have probably suffered from a temporary network or server error. Wait and try again later. If still having problems after several failed attempts, please try to Activate over WiFi instead of Edge, or vice versa. Also, you could try to clear the cache and/or reboot your iPhone.

Q: Can I send and receive MMS over WiFi instead of EDGE/GPRS?
A: No. The Service Operators only allow MMSs to be sent and received through their special Access Points, only accessible over EDGE/GPRS.

Q: How do I delete a sent or received MMS?
A: You just swipe it away, i.e. drag your finger to left or right over the message, just like in the email application for example.

Q: I have noticed that some of the images I received or sent have been made smaller than the original size despite the fact that I have set the image settings to not resize - why?
A: SwirlyMMS does no resizing, unless you explicitly instruct it to do so. However, some Service Providers automatically scales images down if they do not know the capabilities of the handset. Obviously, some Service Providers do not know what the iPhone is capable to do To circumvent these auto-resize issues you can set your iPhone up and make it look like any modern mainstream handset like Nokia, Sony-Ericsson or Motorola, thus being able to receive images of any size.

Q: How do I set my iPhone up to a fake handset?
A: Add the following source in Installer: http://swirlyspace.com/SwirlyMMSSettings/Settings.xml, which will bring another category into Installer called: SwirlyMMS Phone faking. Select a handset from that category to allow your iPhone to pretend to be another handset that may be supported by your Service Provider.

Q: I could not find my question answered in this FAQ - what should I do?
A: You should head over to SwirlyMMS’s forum and hopyfully find out that your question has already been answered. If not, feel free to ask!
