v0.3 - Receive MMSs!

We are happy to announce that we have just submitted a new version of SwirlyMMS to the Ste source repository! Expect to see it soon on the Installer. The major feature in this release is the capability to receive MMSs, which we know many of you have been quite eager for...
So, now you can both send and receive MMSs with your iPhone! Isn't that cool? Besides the new receive feature, a couple of bugs have been fixed and a few under-the-hood enhancements have been made.
Admittedly, this release is still pretty rough. Ok, it is very rough ;-) However, we will make major improvements in the user interface till the next v0.4 release, or dare we call it v1.0…

I am having the same problem as Titanic submitted on 4-24-2008. I have installed the two programs as well and still can not receive the pictures. I have sent pictures and they have been successful but when I try to look at them I can't find the folder. The when I fetch it it gives me a error message but then it works.

I have problems to view receives MMS. I installed MobilePreview and MobileFinder and when i try to browse to the folder ~/Media/MMSFiles doesn't appear the folder MMSFiles!!

ady: you have to wait for the checking-sources progress bar to complete. Takes a while if you do it over edge/gprs (5 minutes maybe). Over wifi it takes 30 secs.

MB.....tHANKS. i DID RESTART :( I SET UP THE T-MOBILE MMS .....but now , everytime I open swirlymms it shuts down in a sec:(. "Can you login via SSH and start the MMS-app from there" how do I do that? I did not install no other programs. ( and I have a pack from my provider for mms , i used it with all my other phones)

Hey....amazing program btw....
i have problems seeing mms's that have just text. like, if i send an mms to someone, and they just hit the reply and type text....i can't read what they write. the file doesn't open. is there any way around this? thanks

further report about TXT file handling bug:
I found that swirlyMMS can only handle MMS TXT files less than 2048 bytes. when the final TXT file is larger than 2048 byte , swirly will cut it . cause the file is encoding in UTF-8 ,and each Chinese Char occupyed 3 bytes,swirly often cuts the file in the middle of one Chinese Char where is a wrong place,so it leads to the UTF-8 decoding error.
Hope it will be useful for u ! and it will be patched soon .thank u!

Here i want to share a good way to see the MMS with you . it is really more convenient than the MobileFinder.
first ,Using Books which can be download in INSTALLER.,
second , use openSSH to login in the IPHONE, using "ln -s" Command to link the "/var/mobiles/Media/MMS " directory to Books directory (always it is "~/Media/EBOOKs"),
then we can use Books to see the MMS ,and erase them .
Is it better than MobileFinder?

But i have to report some bugs which should to be patched.
when a MMS containes a few of TXT files,Swirly always concatenates them as a TXT file and renames it and put it into ~/mobiles/Media/MMS. Right?
the problem is ,
first,the concatenated TXT file always apears not complete, it lost some TXT files or some part of them .especially when the TXT files are a little big.
second, it always apears a wrong encoding format ,which Books can not recognize it as UTF-8. (when i copy it to my WinXP PC ,the notepad can't either.but Ultraedit can,//faint)
OHHH, is terrible for me to see what a mess chars after long time fetching with patience. :(

best wishes to you . you are so great. I use 0.3.5 on my iphone 1.1.4 , it works well ,and hope we can view MMS by swirlymms soon.
a suggestion: Can Swirly send or get MMS on background ? Sending or getting MMS use longer time than SMS,so , if it can work backgroud , we can do something else at that time.
By the way,if Swirly can send MMS to many persons one time ,will be a superise to us ....

Hello. Can Swirly send MMS using wi-fi instead of edge? Or is there a way in which I can configure edge on my iphone but restrict it from using it so that only swirly MMS uses it? Edge is very expensive in Mexico :(

Will this program ever be automated, ie where we dont not have to enter in manually the settings (other than image size)?
I change sim cards very often for different countries. I live in the Philippines and I use 2 Philippine sim cards, and one Thai sim card. Everytime I change a card I have to re-enter all the settings, and I've never gotten the program to actually retrieve an MMS anyway.
On my nokias, when I pop in a new sim, the phone instantly configures MMS/GPRS/etc without me having to do one single thing.
Is the iphone capable of this?

OK so I have version 0.3.5 I send and receive MMS fine when I fetch it's succesful, however when I go to view the fetched files...nothing. I have all the correct settings in mobilefinder i.e. I can view system files and such, but when I get into the MMSFiles folder there is nothing there. Am I doing something wrong? Has anyone else had this problem or is it just me? Also I am running version 1.0, is this my problem?

restarted the iphone and now it's bricked..

It works fine in Tmobile USA 1.1.4 ziphone. Photo are little too small. I would like to have an option to delete the a single message from the history. Maybe just click on the mms and it opens the mobile finder or viewer that would be great. My donation will come.

Good job guys. It works well with T-Mobile US. Although, I wish that I didn't have to install three extra apps(BSD Subsystem, MobileFinder, MobilePreview) just to view a received picture. In the next release, can you write a few extra lines of code that writes a received image to the default Camera Roll folder and creates a thumbnail?

BUT when I try to send a picture message I get this error:

For all of you with AT&T that cannot receive messages from other carriers go to http://swirlymms.megabb.com/support-f1/ and look in the thread for SSH 0.3.2 - crashed phone. I got mine back to 0.3.2 and now it is fully functional again.

Use MobileFinder Preview.
Istall it via Installer and that is it.
Look for mobile/Media/MMSFiles/
It remembers the path. Just tap on the received pic you want...

Fetchphotos: you can view the picture in safari if you are on 113. go into safari, and type in this into the title bar
file:///var/mobile/Media/MMSFiles/the_name_of_the_pic
of course, substitute *the_name_of_the_pic* with the actual name of the picture that you see in mobileviewer/winscp

It contains one bug fix (that has to do with fetching mms) and improved logging.
IT DOES NOT ADDRESS THE PROBLEM WITH RECEIVING MULTIPLE COPIES OF THE SAME MMS!
The bug fix might help (not sure at all) those that cannot receive. Due to the improved logging I hope being able to track down those problems with this version.
Starting from this version there is also no need to uninstall the previous version first. Just make an "Update". You still need to restart the phone though!

I used to have the 0.2.2 working fine. I couldnt find the new version on instasller so i add swirlyspace.com/swirlyspace.xml as a source. refresher the installer and found the new version. installed and asked me to restart iphone before use swirlymms. as the iphone was restarting something very strange happened...it started toi show the apple log as when is restarting and then the apple log started to flash, some white lines all over the screen started to flash as well and some kind of "worms" started to craw all over the screem... was that a virus?!?!?!? After quite a few tries I was able to make the itunes to recognize the iphone, had to restore to factory settings and use ziphone to jailbreak again. Now the phone is fine but I'm not sure what happened and if I will install swirlymms again..anyone had the same problem?!?!?

0.3.4 is still not compatible with AT&T to recieve messages from other carriers. Tech support said they are getting into the AT&T system, but for some reason they are not deliverable. Please re-load 0.3.2 back into Installer.

MB, thanks for responding BUT the MMSFiles folder is not under Media. In fact I can't find MMSFiles anywhere on my phone. If I go to ibrickr and go to var/root/etc the pics are there but I can't get to the MMSFiles in MobileFinder. HELP!!! Any suggestions? I dont want to have to go to ibrickr everytime to see a message. If you want to play AMR audio from MMS, make symlink: ln -sf `/var/mobile/Media/MMSFiles /var/mobile/Media/Recordings` and open VNotes :)

SwirlyMMS 0.3.3 is out now
It has one major bug-fix. Some, or maybe a whole bunch, has suffered from never getting the green-m that indicates that gprs/edge is up and ready to send/receive MMS. I have tested as far as I can myself and I'm pretty confident that it will work for those having this problem (I dont have it). So, if you get the green-m already in 0.3.2 the dont bother to upgrade. There are a few very minor other fixes as well but those are more or less cosmetic.

I can confirm this working on a Jailbroken 1.1.4 phone using Cingular/AT&T. However, it seems to only work when I don't put anything in for MMS-Specific APN Settings... i just fill in MMSC and Proxy

Hey guys, I just recieved an .amr file (voice note) through SwirlyMMS! So, my guess is I would be able to send an .amr file back if Swirly recognized other file types to send! I moved the .amr file I recorded with Erica Sudans Voicenotes app into the DCIM photo folder with Finder. But, unfortunately, SwirlyMMS only lets you pick .JPG files to send. But my guess would be this wouldn't that hard to add.

Just repeating this so it doesn't get lost in the noise..
I highly recommend using the forum for your questions because not only are things organized by category and topic, you receive a notification if someone replies in the discussion.. I've also been creating a FAQ section and the wealth of knowledge gained from this organization has been amazing.. just look at how many posts and replies have popped up since I opened it up :)
Once again! open your browser and go to swirlymms . megabb . com .. remove the spaces naturally .. probably a lot easier on the devs if you keep your support related questions over there so they don't need to hop back and forth, plus it benefits the community to be able to find all the answers in a common location.

W00t! Just successfully sent and received an MMS on my AT&T iPhone 1.1.4 (locked & activated through iTunes and jailbroken using zIphone) using SwirlyMMS, but in order to do so I had to call AT&T ask for them to add the MMS feature to my account by telling them a cock & bull story about having another phone that I use to send MMS with.
However I did this once before when only sending was working and the feature was automatically removed as it was invalid for an iPhone account and the customer service rep told me there is no way to avoid that so I would have to keep calling in but she couldn't tell me at what interval the system does this clean up. Any AT&T insiders know how to get the feature permanently added? I asked but apparently there isn't...
Note: The MMS settings are the ones floating around the interweb for AT&T - mmsc.cingular.com proxy: 066.209.011.032
You will need both those settings AND for AT&T to add MMS Pay Per Use to your account for it to work, also remember to restart your phone after installation! I did it after saving the settings just to be safe, oh and make sure you have WiFi OFF.

2) no ip address on en0, ip1 or ip2. You need the details?

I highly recommend using the forum for your questions because not only are things organized by category and topic, you receive a notification if someone replies in the discussion.. I've also been creating a FAQ section and the wealth of knowledge gained from this organization has been amazing.. just look at how many posts and replies have popped up since I opened it up :)
Once again! open your browser and go to swirlymms . megabb . com .. remove the spaces naturally .. probably a lot easier on the devs if you keep your support related questions over there so they don't need to hop back and forth, plus it benefits the community to be able to find all the answers in a common location.

ingvarha: I know ventelo is strange. If you want to you can try this. Put your MMS APN in your normal gprs settings and leave the APN settings in SwirlyMMS blank. The do (wifi must be off for this test):
1) start mail-app, what happens?
2) start a terminal window and give the command "ifconfig". What is the output?
3) start SwirlyMMS, what happens?

Upgrading to 0.3.2, I get "HTTP/1.1 400 Bad Request" instead of crash when using the Internet APN. Not that this helps much. MMS APN is still not working (grey "M").

I too seem to have the same problem as several others. My APNs are different for MMS and internet access. Giving the internet APN to SwirlyMMS makes the "M" go green, but sending of course does not work. It starts to send, but then crashes. Using the MMS APN, the "M" stays grey. Running 0.3.1 on 1.1.3 jailbreaked phone. Provider is Ventelo, Norway.

SwirlyMMS 0.3.2 is now available from our own swirlyspace repository.
Uninstall what you have
restart
refresh your Installer sources
Install the new 0.3.2 version
restart again
now this should solve the crashing CommCenter that some people have suffered from.

This is kind of interesting... I'm not sure if this is the deciding variable, but it seems to be the case. Any picture that you might have made in the RealArtist app where you take your pictures and distort them, won't send correctly. At least that's what it seems like to me. The recieving end either gets a black screen instead of the picture, or just a "cannot view picture"... something of that nature.
Not a huge deal, but if anyone is testing this out for the first time on their snapped photos from RealArtist (like me) and notice that your pics aren't being sent... Just try an unmodified photo.

I have too problm witch SwirlyMMS when APN for Swirly is different from EDGE. When I configure APN in swirly as "www.plusgsm.pl" the "m" icon is green (but MMS dont work) but when i configure APN as "mms.plusgsm.pl" which is correct tge "m" icon is gray.

To all of you having problems to receive and that you loose signal etc (probably due to a CommCenter crash). A fix is on its way. Currently I have a beta tester to test it since I cannot get the fault at my operator.
Start to use the forum that Lonnie wrote about below. It will make support easier.

I have the same issue on voda UK. I have 1.1.4, unlocked and jailbroken via ZiPhone 2.5, can send perfectly, but a just the moment I 'seem' to be recieving an mms the signal disappears and phone becomes erractic for about 20 seconds, then back to normal. Something weird going on.

I have successfully received an MMS but then I've got an SMS from provider informing me of incoming MMS that I can view on their website. So it looks like although the MMS was received, provider's servers are not aware of it.

Installed fine, swirlyMMS load up fine and I can send okay, when someone sends me an MMS my displat lights up for a second or two, I loose network coverage for a couple of seconds and then it reapears. but no sign of an MMS, any ideas. I'm running 1.1.4(unlocked etc by independence) on UK Vodafone.

I experience the same error that dphone does. CommCenter crashes, signal bar goes to zero for a few seconds, at the approx time that i should've recieved the MMS.

adiviking - Look to the left of the battery icon you should see an "M" if the background is grey give it 30-60 seconds to turn green if it doesnt turn green after 2 mins your mmsc settings are wrong.

Is anyone more having problem with ÅÄÖ in the received mms? Must be some encoding problem. Otherwise everything works. Off course it would bee neat to be able to see the mms in the app and to be able to delete them. And if the pictures are stored among the other prictures from eg. the cameraroll.

For you having problems that the received pic is very small:
Some operators resizes the pics to smallest possible when they dont know what kind of device it is sending to. SwirlyMMS have the possibility to pretend beeing another phone and voila you will get the pics in correct size (hopefully).
Do this, add the following source to the installer: swirlyspace.com/SwirlyMMSSettings/Settings.xml
Then select the phone you want to pretend to be!! Hopefully you will now receive larger pics. If not, do you know which phones are prefered by your operator? Tell me about it!!

Not having much luck with the receiving part (can send fine). It would appear (although this is guessing) that when the WAP push message arrives (which again I assume is being intercepted by swirlymms) my commcenter crashes (can watch the signal go to 1 bar, then searching and then full signal). If I look in var/logs/crashreports/ then there is a crash report for this.

OK tested this again and on a virgin 1.1.3 with ZiPhone 2.0 and following the instructions on got it working without issue.
All I had to do was:
at the source swirlyspace.com/SwirlySpace.xml
install 0.3.1_1
RESTART iPhone (This is the most important part)
put in settings, start sending MMS
done and works without any chmod, chown nothing thats all.

Just wanted to post that I downloaded 0.3.1_1 and it worked! no more crashes and images sent and received. the only problem I'm having is that when the pictures come in, they're resized really small. not sure if this is swirlymms or just t-mobile doing it though.

To all of you saying that you cannot see it on the installer. First, Ste did not yet put it up on his site. You can in the mean time use my temporary repository. So add the following source to your installer: swirlyspace.com/SwirlySpace.xml
Make sure you spell correctly. This means that capital letters etc also have to be exactly as above!!!!

1) uninstall you current installation
2) switch phone off, then on
3) refresh your sources, you should now see version 0.3.1_1
4) install that version and again: off -> on

The problem is that Installer in my case did not copy smshook.dylib inside the application bundle. I had to copy it myself. Still didn't receive any MMS though.

Jag får också två st mms när någon skickar till mig. Efter att jag hämtat ett mms och stänger av swirly och sedan startar det igen blir inte ikonen grön, första gången blir den det och jag kan hämta utan problem. När jag går in andra gången måste jag starta om telefonen för nr jag försöker starta swirly stannar det vid logotypen. Annars funkar det bra!

Ok for all of u guys out there having problems sending MMS's i think i found a way... just change the size to maximum send someone a pic, then go back and change it to high and it should work... it worked for me!!!
But I do Have a Q about the size part... I sent a pic to my iphone with the size on high and when i went in to preview it was showing it pretty small, and when I sent it to my brother he got it full screen and big... btw he has a sidekick...

I got it working...
Open mobile finder to view the thumbnail pics received in ~/Media/MMSFiles folder
To view the pics (full size) select modify - open with the preview.app
To view the text sent with the pic select modify - open with textedit.app
P.S. Receiving mms works with wifi on too!

Well I have tried everything here to get v0.3 to work, including restoring to 1.1.4 and unlocking, jailbreaking, activate, doing CHMOD and CHOWN and then running swirlymms...it just is determined to crash on me. I guess I will just downgrade back to v0.2.2 and just wait to see if this is fixed.

my understanding is that due to no Real UI that reading messages is only possible in the Finder/Preview.
Maybe the guys could take a look at the SMSD and integrate that UI a little into this app as its pretty good. I use SMSD as a full replacement for the standard SMS app and if we could get the SMS and MMS integration a little tighter like many new phones that would be really sweet.

So I restored to 1.1.4, and installed SwirlyMMS again. Got it working - no more crashes! Recieving MMS works fine - however, when I tried sending an MMS to another phone it says "tmp.jpg Unable to open file." Both phones are AT&T w/ an unlmiited messaging plan.

thanx JP:I solve all the problem and can recieve the mms now, but as I said, My mms sever is CMWAP while the net serve is CMNET, so i use CMNET but set CMWAP in the swirly app, this cause the big trouble that when I recieve a mms, the serve is swicth to CMWAP, and cannot turn back, so I have to turn off and on the edge by netservice manully.......could any one possibly give me a mathod to solve this problem? hermitman: you have to instal term-vt100 from installer. Than in order to get it to work you have to install the SUID lib fix from the (Tweaks 1.1.3) category. If you don't do that it will keep telling you that your password (alpine) is wrong.
Once you login (root:alpine) type:
cd /Applications/SwirlMMS.app
./SwirlyMMS
that will load the app

Shawn: Unfortunately, I don't really know... you could however, search up the fix for the term vt100 password error on ... there are tons of discussions on that, and my solution was pretty much copied from that approach. I hope you'll be able to find a way to reverse that symbolic link there. One other approach I can think of is maybe to login through Fugu? Not sure if it can read the contents of your iPhone as it is, but if it can, maybe you can dlete the link through there :)
As an update, my SwirlyMMS is working great now (on 1.1.4)... been sending and receiving MMS's for the past hour, although oddly enough, sometimes all my recipient gets is a blank pic. Although, as can be seen through Shawn's experience, be very careful with the approach I used :(

Finally got it working on 1.1.3 after several hours! The chmod 777 worked for me eventually after several installs/uninstalls. However I can not view the received MMS's, the app states saved to var/media/mmsfiles. I've installed Mobile finder but that only gives me a tiny image... any ideas on how to see the full size picture... Help!!!

I finally got it to work...for me at least. I had the problem where it kept crashing to the springboard. I tried everything...chown, chmod - neither worked. I was able to run via ssh or term, but never through the app itself.
What I did was send myself an MMS. The app recognized that I received one and gave me the 1 notifier. I still couldn't open the app to retrieve though without it crashing. I then loaded the app through Term, which works everytime. That allowed me to "fetch" the MMS. After that I closed term and ever since I've been able to open the app normally from the springboard.
I guess it must have either added or changed required files for the app to work. My guess is that the app is looking for a certain file on load that isn't there, but is added after you receive your first message.

For me, the mms server and net server are different, and I just leave the net setting blank(in the iphone General->Network),this way when i start my iphone, i can update the weather before i use swirlymms! and I set the mms server in swirlymms. after that when i use swirlymms, the app turn the server to THE ONE i SET IN SWIRLYAPP, but after i recieve the mms, i cannot turn the net server to the other one, that means i cannot surf the internet(the weather cannot update)! any one got idea?

Seems to load OK here.. but if I send an MMS to the phone, the phone looses signal, comes up witha message saying repair needed and then has to be rebooted to get signal again.

lol ok here's the odd part...
From inside ssh

./SwirlyMMS (hit enter and app will run on iphone)
it runs fine...
CTRL+C (Hold CTRL key and press C to close it)
WTF... why does it run fine from SSH but not through springboard?

Anyway, I ran the app in terminal and found it couldn't find the libgcc library. Creating the symbolic link seems to solve the problem.

ok I've started tinkering with everything.
/Applications/SwirlyMMS.app and all files in that directory should be root:admin
If I go into the SwirlyMMS.app folder and I chmod 755 * The app will work for ONE instance... after closing it and re-opening the file it will crash back to springboard....
I've searched for hidden files but nothing to be found. The permissions and ownership/groups stay the same after I close the app so that rules out something resetting the permissions on exit....
Right now I'm stumped but I'll see what I can come up with. Using 1.1.4 right now.

Okay so I was thinking about what the difference was between v0.2.2 and v0.3 and realized that the whole wifi thing was a new change as well. So on a hunch I turned off my wifi service and went to try to open SwirlyMMS and it worked! So I exited SwirlyMMS and tried going back in and it started crashing again. So I went back to services and turned on Wifi and tried getting back into SwirlyMMS and it worked again. So it's very weird, have to turn on and off wifi before going in to actually get into it.
I hope this helps Tommy and Mats in fixing whatever is wrong with it :) I'm definitely looking forward to using it!

Same problem here. I originally posted the chmod fix when 2.2 was released, but it doesn't work for this version (running 1.1.3 dev team jailbreak) Also tried James instructions of changing to admin. Still no luck. I'm back on version 2.2 with it sending again. Waiting to hear of a fix.

The app loads great and hasn't crashed. I did what you guys suggested and left my APN settings blank (since my EDGE APN is the same). I've sent one picture to two different people (one with AT&T and one with Boost Mobile) and am waiting for them to send pictures back.
I have some bugs and requests but I'll post them when (if) I receive some pictures back.

What i did notice though is that when I made the changes James mentioned, it didn't crash right after the splash screen. It went into the main screen and then after half a second, crashes to springboard.
Hopefully that helps someone figure this out :D

OK, now I used the swirly source its installed.
My iPhone is a 1.1.2 OTB with itunes update to 1.1.3 and ZiPhone
Swirly is now hanging on start image
I ssh to my iPhone
cd /Applications
chmod +s SwirlyMMS.app/SwirlyMMS

(note the root:admin as root:wheel did not work)
now send and receive works but I can not view these anyone got any suggestions on that?
I have never been able to view the sent MMS and now receive works I cant view any maybe the permissions on the directory they are receieved into are wrong?
after install it works picked up all my old settings I sent a test and received my first MMS

ok for those having issues with app not starting try this it worked on _many_ iPhones for me.
ssh to iPhone or use Terminal if you have it installed.
Login as root using your root password (default is alpine)
now enter these commands..
cd /Applications
chmod +s SwirlyMMS.app/SwirlyMMS
chown root:wheel SwirlyMMS.app
This will make it work for you I am sure.
I still can not find the v0.3 in installer even after refresh sources am I crazy?

My 1.1.3 installation has SwirlyMMS installed as root .. you could always try this..
cd /var/Applications;chown root:wheel -R SwirlyMMS.app;chmod 777 SwirlyMMS.app/SwirlyMMS ... this will make all files in the SwirlyMMS folder owned by root and will insure entirely proper permissions on the SwirlyMMS executeable .. only attempt this if you're comfortable ..

Richard: Install mobile finder and then install the mobilepreview and mobiletextedit plugins .. mms will download to /var/mobile/Media/MMSFiles .. when you close out finder, it will (or it has for me) always restart in that folder.. makes it simple .. I think use iphonebrowser to pull down whatever I want to keep ..

As soon as I see it up on Ste I will remove this source and thus, you should then also remove this source from your installer.

It kind of sucks being at the mercy of these repositories for your releases. MobileChat had the same issue with Conceited Software (the guy is real busy though), so they set up a temporary one for v2.1. (hoping for a temporary one for v0.3...)

lonnie: you are correct. If your edge/gprs APN is the same as you MMS APN then leave it empty in Swirly and it is ready to go as soon as it has started.

One more thing, which I never tried until yesterday .. if your APN for MMS is the same as it is for edge, don't enter it in Swirly .. it seems to load up and be ready to go much faster since I took that out .. now I just have the proxy / mmsc settings at the top in there and it seems the moment I touch the swirly icon and the log screen comes up .. it's ready to go .. so only enter the wap information if it differs from your edge setting..

STE did do some updates today but swirly wasn't one of them, he is very busy and its NOT his job remember he does this as a hobby for us. (maybe you should donate)
I for one would prefer to use installer (even though I could manually install) in fact I had to change the ownership and setUID on the app to make it work on 1.1.3
Cant wait for v0.3 :)
