v0.2.2...

iPhonePosted by Tommy Svensson 2008-01-17 20:42:22
We have just released a new minor revision update: v0.2.2.
Compared with v0.2.1 it only contains one bugfix, but a crucial one as reported by Stein Åge (thx Stein!).
This release has been submitted to Ste and will hopefully show up really soon on the Installer this time.

Stay tuned for the forthcoming v0.3 release, which will let you receive MMS messages on your iPhone!

/Tommy & Mats

Hi there,

I just open the application and it turns off wifi but then just crashes after 1 sec.

What can I do to make it work?

Thanks / Martin

Posted by Mats B 2008-03-01 20:42:45

Are your iPhone a 1.1.3 or 1.1.4? In that case you need to do a
chmod +s /Applications/SwirlyMMS.app/SwirlyMMS

See also blog-entries below.

I just want to tell everyone that the beta-testing is more or less over and has showed us that we have a 0.3 ready for release very soon. We now just have to make a package for the installer and send it ste to put it up on his repository.

Dont be surprised if you see it during the weekend!! :)

stay tuned

Danny: Swirly doesn't operate over wifi, it requires that you have a messaging plan with your cell provider that includes multimedia messaging.. and for that to work, you'll need edge I'm afraid.

Posted by danny 2008-02-29 02:10:29

Hi is it possible to use wifi when using swirly mms? Or have the choice between wifi and edge... I only ask this as i dont have a data plan to use edge so it cost me quite a bit to send a pic. It really is a great app tho.... very clever guys well done!!!!!

Posted by Mic 2008-02-29 01:15:36

k... By the way I asked Mats and he said if they dont run into any problems it will be out with in 1 to 3 days...

Posted by lonnie 2008-02-29 00:38:17

My plan is to only restore if my upgrade to 1.1.4 doesn't work .. but you're right, if I do need to restore then I'll go straight to 1.1.3 with ziphone :) and HURRAY FOR 0.3 .. I'm sure it won't be long, after all the month is almost over ;)

Posted by Mic 2008-02-28 18:53:22

lonnie: If u r already going to restore why dont u just go derectly to 1.1.3 using ZiPhone?

Mats: I am so happy it is coming out soon!!!

Posted by lonnie 2008-02-28 18:14:07

Yeah I heard the dev team's method was supposed to be the correct method, but I also saw far more people encountering problems with it .. I may just try the 1.1.4 update and then see where it goes, if it fails I'll restore to 1.1.2 and use the dev team method :)

Posted by Fabian Cortez 2008-02-28 17:10:16

Lonnie: You may want to use to Dev team's 1.1.3 jailbreak and not nate true's. The Dev team's jailbreak and unlock is said to be the "correct" method as it runs under "mobile" and not "root."

P.S.: I'm also on T-Mobile USA running 1.1.3 via the Dev team method.

Posted by Richard 2008-02-28 16:21:44

Lonnie: using the tutorial over on www.iclarified.com it did everything for you, jailbreak, activation and then follow the guide for the unlock. took about 15 mins in all and thats getting everything back to how i had it. very very simple

Posted by Fabian Cortez 2008-02-28 15:59:19

Lonnie: Yes you're right, a forum would be better for conversating lol.

As for conversation view in iSMS: http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?t=30163#6

I believe it was brought up as SMSD has had the feature and I really do like to option to view it or not as it does allow you to view your "chat log" with a certain individual. Opposed to going back and forth from "inbox" to "sent."

(hoping for an iSMS and SwirlyMMS integration one day...)

Posted by lonnie 2008-02-28 15:36:55

Richard - I'm running a tmobile USA phone, using nate true's jailbreak .. did you have to do anything special to activate? or was your phone already activated after the update? I may have to give this a go ..

Posted by Richard 2008-02-28 15:33:47

ps. forgot to mention i'm running a jailbroken iphone on t-mobile here in the UK

Posted by Richard 2008-02-28 15:32:15

Update: 1.1.4 works fine, had to do the terminal chmod thing again but all is working correctly :-)

Posted by lonnie 2008-02-28 13:56:59

As for 1.1.4, from what I gather at least, it's almost completely identical to 1.1.3 so it should work the same as that scenerio.. there seem to be only minor changes which are probably in preperation for the SDK more than anything else.. I'd still wait and watch Richard .. if you have an ATT phone you're probably ok though, you can still jailbreak and install apps .. you might however lose what you have installed currently.

Posted by Mats B 2008-02-28 12:59:45

Definately we will go for a build-in viewer in coming releases with a proper inbox and outbox or something similar to the conversation in the SMS-app.

/MB

Posted by lonnie 2008-02-28 12:37:51

From what I understand... 1.1.4 is a smooth update if you have an ATT account ... zipphone will jailbreak it .. if you have something other than ATT then they are encouraging you to wait another day or two, a new version of zipphone will jailbreak and activate.. mats: The main thing that matters with photo roll is that they are jpg files, that they follow the naming convention and that there is an associated thm file .. if you're logging the sender information it might help, and you could still dump the text attachment to the /var/mobile/media/MMSfiles directory .. ? just a thought.. the best bet is still to implement your own viewer or something down the road ..

Posted by Richard 2008-02-28 11:31:12

Anyone tried it, just about to do the update and don't want to cock things up!

Posted by Mats B 2008-02-28 10:50:03

I think it will work but we havent tried and probably wont try for a while.

/MB

Posted by Richard 2008-02-28 10:32:28

as the 1.1.4 release was only supposed to fix a few bugs do you think this will work on 1.1.4 or not?

Posted by Mats B 2008-02-28 08:57:08

Mic: yes there is another addition to the MobileFinder called MobileTextEdit that can show .txt files. To show pics you use MobilePreview. In large yes, the release will be this month. We are beta-testing it now so if nothing strange is found we will have it out in a day or two or three.

/MB

Posted by Mic 2008-02-28 08:49:54

Thx for the answer... That cleared up alot... :)

but now I have a diffrent Q... Is the iphone capable of opening txt. files?

Is it possible for future V to have the app make a copy of the pic to the camera roll?

and in the comments bellow u said that u will be very disapointed if u dont finish v0.3 by the end of the month... r u still on that timeline? or is it going to be longer?

Thx for every thing.... Im so excited!! btw how can I learn to program like u r doing?

Posted by Mats B 2008-02-28 08:26:20

lonnie: yes, if the MMS has a plain-text-part (which normally all MMSes have. Anyway Sony-Ericsson phones seem to also put the title in a plain-text part). All the text-parts in an MMS will be merged together and saved in a .txt file with the same file-name format as described below.

/MB

Posted by Mats B 2008-02-28 08:22:40

Our first attempt was to save to the photo roll BUT that has a vary large drawback. The saved files MUST be on exactly the same format as the "normal" photo-files created by the camera whic is something like "IMG_0123.JPG" and .THM. Anything else and it is not shown at all in the camera-roll browser. Since now in 0.3 we dont really have a proper "inbox" we thought that a certain amount of information must be visible from the saved files. That is why we dont store the pics in the roll directory.

Posted by Mic 2008-02-28 05:58:05

Mats is there any way I can manually save it to the photo roll?

Posted by lonnie 2008-02-28 04:42:14

Saving to the photo roll should be easy, it just requires that you also create a thumbnail file as well .. in fact that would be a great thing to do .. Store the original resolution file and then a thumbnail file .. then from the photo roll, you can e-mail the photo or view it relatively easy.. but for other media, I'd store it as you are..

Posted by Mic 2008-02-28 04:25:33

Hi... for v0.3 why didnt u guys make the MMS get saved to the regular photo app...?
woudint that have been easier?

Thx for every thing! I love this app!!!

Posted by lonnie 2008-02-28 02:17:37

I do generally like the way iSMS functions, but I have to admit I like the way the built in SMS displays the conversation.. grouped by person you're conversating with and not sequentially by time received.. that would be a good idea for Swirly by the way, store the MMS messages in a folder that is the number of the person sending and then within there, the files can be named with the timestamp .. ? but again for future versions.. like 1.0 or 2.0 :) an all purpose app would be a godsend .. integrated sms/mms to replace the built in system entirely.

Posted by lonnie 2008-02-27 21:13:35

you should bring me on as your public relations guy .. I'm here enough.. ha jk

Posted by lonnie 2008-02-27 21:12:28

You know guys, I think a threaded forum would be extremely useful for this project.. just my two cents.. it gets very difficult to keep track of conversations using the simple comment system.. at any rate, I'm also curious about one other thing and that is .. in MMS messages, often you can put a message in with the photo .. it sounds like 0.3 will parse out all media and dump it to a directory.. does this include the plain text message, if present?

Posted by Fabian Cortez 2008-02-27 18:24:06

Sounds good!

Mats: Have you looked into working/collaborating with Shawn Chain from iSMS (hteeteepeecolon//code. /p/weisms/ - [email protected])?

I think incorporating both apps would be magnificent.

Once again, thanks to Lonnie for his great Wi-Fi suggestion and can't wait for this app to arrive later this week. :P

Posted by lonnie 2008-02-27 17:32:32

I wouldn't be so sure, skep! I have a feeling we'll be seeing it in a matter of days.

Posted by skep 2008-02-27 17:30:35

i dont think its coming out

Posted by lonnie 2008-02-27 16:39:52

there is an installer app/patch that allows safari to browse/open files locally.. I'm not sure exactly what that app does, but probably just changes an xml attribute if I had to guess.. it allows you to use the file:// url

Posted by lonnie 2008-02-27 16:37:46

Awesome, can't wait! ... hey another potentially useful option until a viewer is implemented (0.4 or 0.5) .. maybe have the option to automatically forward MMS messages to an e-mail address .. or copy them to an e-mail address in addition to saving them locally on the phone..

Posted by Mats B 2008-02-27 16:12:21

lonnie: is it possible to browse local files with safari?

/MB

Posted by Mats B 2008-02-27 16:01:40

lonnie: yes you will get notified even if the MMS-app is not up and running. The notification, that you have received an MMS, is handled by a separate "server" process. This "server" will also update the MMS-icons badge number in the same way as for email and SMS etc. See http://swirlyspace.com/iphone/apps/mms/teaser.html

Posted by hermitman 2008-02-27 15:08:30

well done, congratulations! That is really a good news, so I think we may see the v0.3 very very soon!!!!! So I can get the newspapers from CHINAMOBILE again.

Posted by lonnie 2008-02-27 14:59:35

Mats,

First of all .. you're welcome, and thank you for all the effort! my question is .. does mms run in the background? meaning - do we get notified when an MMS has been received? or do we need to launch the program and wait for it if we know it's coming? I'm assuming a method has been devised to allow polling, or running in the background but I'm not sure about that until it's in my hands :) .. with wifi not needing to be shut off, seems especially possible to have automatic polling going on.

Posted by Mats B 2008-02-27 14:56:30

Some info regarding the 0.3 release:
1) wi-fi is no longer disabled when the MMS-app is started. Instead the routing table is changed (thanx for this idea lonnie)
2) when receiving an MMS the MMS is decoded and ALL its contained files (like *.jpg, *.mp3 etc) are placed in /var/mobile/Media/MMSFiles and given names in the format <date>-<time> <sender number> <title> <seq_no>.jpg (or .mp3 or ...). Then you must go there with your favourite growser. I use MobileFinder with the plugin MobileViewer to view pictures. Sound files, movies etc can be received BUT cannot easilly be viewed/listened to unless someone has a nice viewer/listener for for those.

i had no problem installing swirly mms on my iphone, i just can't use it. whenever i send it says "error: failed to resize image". It will not save my MMSC, Proxy and APN settings. When i input the settings and press save it shuts down (as if it were saving). When i restart, it is as it was before i input anything. The fields are blank. It fails to save the image resize setting as well.

Posted by CryHavok 2008-02-26 21:58:00

Will firmware 1.1.4, released today, affect the launch of v0.3?

Posted by lonnie 2008-02-26 21:35:16

So bottom line tommy and mat .. no rush.. just ASAP!!! jk .. lol .. I think we're just all excited .. I'll give you a free copy of my latest cd if you like electronic/industrial .. ( oneduality) .. if you like it you got it for all your work

Posted by lonnie 2008-02-26 21:24:50

Well my thing is that until I gain MMS functionality on the phone I have to carry around two phones and swap sims which is a pain.. my other phone handles mms fine but it's old and has other issues.. I use MMS in a work capacity (hard to explain) .. sending is ok for most of the time, but sometimes I need to receive and as it stands now, it means I have to swap sims .. sucks :)

Posted by albert 2008-02-26 19:26:07

i agree with lonnie. the month is almost over. I was hoping it would come out a few days before the month ended but i guess not. I just hope it doesnt get delayed again.

I would be the happiest boy in all the land if it were released today .. I could really use this thing right about now .. lol

Hope to see 0.3 soon :) Can't wait to receive mms on the iphone :D

Posted by lonnie 2008-02-25 20:39:08

I agree that the MMS app should one day integrate sms functionality as well, it'd be nice if it were fairly seemless as it is with most phones.. though I'm content with the path things are on right now .. the ability to send and receive SMS will be great.. I for one cannot wait to try it :) I'd love to be part of a beta group ;) hint hint.. jk

Posted by Fabian Cortez previously known as "spell check" 2008-02-25 18:55:43

Wow Lonnie, thanks for your great input!

What I'd really like to see one day is the incorporation of SwirlyMMS and iSMS into one app. iSMS has a really nice UI and your MMS code would look and work wonderfully within iSMS.

Just a suggestion.

Posted by lonnie 2008-02-25 16:57:07

Awesome! glad to hear it, with that news I'm even more anxious to try out 0.3 because I'm in wifi environments almost all the time and quite often for some reason, when swirly shuts my wifi off, it doesn't come back up.. I'm looking forward to (hopefully) trying out 0.3 this week ;)

Posted by MatsB 2008-02-25 15:46:07

lonnie: in 0.3 we wont switch off-on wifi. We change the routing table instead. Works like a charm. Thanks for pushing us a little bit. :)

Awesome work! Why Apple couldn't make a simple app like this is beyond me. Been missing MMS since upgrading to the iPhone in November. Excellent work guys, working on my contract o2 1.1.3 firmware phone with the chmod line added via SSH

:-D

Posted by Mic 2008-02-24 11:25:38

Never mined Thx... I found out how to do it... and it worked.... YAY

I Love this app!

Posted by Mic 2008-02-24 11:07:36

Thx... I tryd changing the permissions to 4755 but after I saved it, it just went back to 0755???

I want to try other ways to get it to work but I dont know how... Like Mats sayd to "chmod +s /Applications/SwirlyMMS.app/SwirlyMMS" I have no clue what that means...? I really need help...

BTW thank u for deving the app... when it worked for me on 1.1.2 it was really great!!!

Posted by libanon 2008-02-24 08:53:44

mic

install openssh on iphone then go download winscp somewhere on the internet then get in to the iphone thru winscp and find the swirlymms.app and rightclick and there you can set permissions(if that isnt working try to open the folder and highlight all of the files in swirlymms.app and then set permissions)

:)

Posted by Mats B 2008-02-23 17:14:30

lonnie: you are absolutely correct . It could be fixed by setting up the routing tables and as a matter of fact that would probably be the best way to do this since it wouldnt then interfere with wifi. Anyhow, SwirlyMMS currently disables wifi when started and re-enables it again when you exit. Maybe this will be something for a post-0.3 release.

For all of you having problems running SwirlyMMS at 1.1.3. READ THE POSTS below!!! What you must do is: "chmod +s /Applications/SwirlyMMS.app/SwirlyMMS"

Posted by hermitman 2008-02-23 17:10:12

got that, thank you lonnie, you help me learn a lot about iphone!

Posted by lonnie 2008-02-23 17:05:35

spell check: thank you for that :-P .. :) hermitman, what I'm saying is that when wifi is active, edge is not off .. you don't see the edge icon perhaps but I've verified that the edge interface is still active while wifi is enabled.. the issue (if you can call it one) is that when wifi is up it becomes the "default route" for all traffic, but that with the help of the route command, you can create static routes that use the edge interface rather than wifi .. which is required for MMS since your provider will only accept connection from the cell network ..

Posted by hermitman 2008-02-23 04:43:14

lonnie, a few question about your idea, suppose iam running an app over wifi, and then there come the mms, and of course the iphone force ALL TRAFFIC use edge, then at that moment, the wifi app must offline, for ALL TRAFFIC is over edge! Am I got your idea? or are u mean only the mms apps are forced to use the edge? so iphone can check the app for what net will it use, and then give it the right net(wifi/edge)?

Posted by spell check 2008-02-23 04:22:19

*voila

Posted by Mic 2008-02-23 01:25:07

How do u change the permissions?

Im runnig 1.1.3 with the ziphone jailbreak, activate and Unlock and I have Boot loader 3.9 and every time I try to get into the app it opens and then closes... the first time I used it it opened but after it saved the settings I wasent able to get back in... does anyone know what to do? THX...

Posted by lonnie 2008-02-22 19:40:52

If there are devs that want to do something like this, or if the swirly team wants to try it for 0.4 .. the process is basically to get the iphones edge ip which can be aquired several different ways .. once you have that, you can issue the command route add -net (mmsc gateway ip) (iphones edge ip) .. you can repeat the command a second time using the proxy ip in place of the mmsc .. this forces all traffic destined for mmsc / proxy to use the edge interface.. viola

Posted by lonnie 2008-02-22 19:32:26

And so I don't confuse anyone; what I'm saying is that the MMS app can be written to send via edge without interfering with wifi, but it currently is not being done that way .. I'm not suggesting there are commands you can run right now to make swirly stop disabling wifi ..

Posted by lonnie 2008-02-22 19:21:20

hermitman, sortilege: Wifi and Edge can both be used at once, I've done a number of tests and sent a message a long time ago to the devs :) there is a very simple way that Wifi can be on or off and it won't matter .. in short, the BSD subsystem has to be installed (I think that will be required) and two simple commands ran that will essentually route mms traffic through edge without interfering with wifi .. I was able to do this in tests and connect to my MMS gateway manually via Edge while Wifi was up .. so with all that said, it IS possible, why it's not being done that way with SwirlyMMS is unclear.. but I did contact them with that information.

Posted by libanon 2008-02-22 18:28:57

FerrariF1 maybe a problem with permissions?

remember permission 755 is our friend :P

Hi. I am running a 1.1.3 Firmware iPhone, with 3.9 bootloader and 4.03 BB. I restored with itunes to 1.1.3 and jailbroke and activiated with Ziphone and then unlocked with anysim 1.1.3. Everytime i open Swirly MMS it just opends loads and closes by itself. Does anyone know how to make it work? thanks

Posted by hermitman 2008-02-22 17:50:33

agree with Sortilege, edge and wifi cannot use together, so when swirlymms is on, iphone has to turn off the wifi.

Posted by Sortilege 2008-02-22 16:59:57

Not sure noob, but i think wifi has to be turned of anyway for swirly to send a message. Am not 100% sure though, might wanna ask someone else.

Posted by noob 2008-02-22 15:39:05

Hmmm... after upgrading to Ziphone break I noticed that when swirly is opened, my wifi setting gets turned off. Is this issue addressed in the update? Does anyone else have this problem?

I previously used Nates jailbreak and swirlymms worked great... I recently updated using the Ziphone break (after an itunes restore) and swirly still works great (although it did crash the first 2 times i opened it)!! I love you guys OMG!!!!! (3.9bl, 4.03bb, 1.1.3fw).

Posted by noname 2008-02-21 21:34:49

thanx, your effort will make me able to recieve the isms this month!!!

Posted by albert 2008-02-21 18:30:11

just wondering but was the user interface updated in any way? I mean are we able to finally see the messages that were sent or just the time and the recepiant? Just curious. Thanks for the update guys!

Posted by lonnie 2008-02-20 23:42:50

darrywood: sounds like they're hoping for a release sometime within the next week and a half, but no promises obviously .. sounds like it's come a long ways.. lets hope for this week instead of next ;)

Posted by Darrywood 2008-02-20 20:08:41

Hey :) is 0.3 soon avalable? Can you give some updates, on what state you are in the development?

Thx. for the great app!

Posted by lonnie 2008-02-19 22:14:31

heh I don't think I'm impatient mainly because if I knew it was coming out in 5 months I'd be happy to wait 5 months and stop checking back until about the 4 month mark :) it's not the not knowing that sort of creates the impatience I think .. the idea it could come in an hour, or a month .. Anyway! thanks for that information .. it helps!

Posted by Mats B 2008-02-19 19:42:02

I understand you are impatient. Anyhow, me myself, would be very VERY disappointed if we are not releasing during this month.

/Mats B

Posted by lonnie 2008-02-19 17:20:04

And don't take my comment as rude, pushy or impatient .. it's more just trying to get a handle on expectation so those of us that come back several times a day holding their breath can relax for a bit :)

Posted by lonnie 2008-02-19 17:18:00

uksteve: iphone pc suite is a good interim solution for sure.. !

Posted by lonnie 2008-02-19 17:16:59

carnil: the magic setuid bit! .. glad it's working for you :) so here we are, over a month later and nearly 100 comments .. we know some of the roadblocks with the iphone firmware changes and the technical difficulties that required rebuilding the toolchain .. but there's a lingering question that everyone here is really wanting to know that never gets addressed.. do we have a general idea at all when we may see a release? I mean even a guestimate so we don't have to come here daily and refresh 50 times ;) .. a week? a day? a month..? basically comes down to: how often should I check back for news?

Posted by ingvar 2008-02-19 15:27:10

Installed swirly, and set up edge/mms settings. Did the chmod/chown tricks. No complaints from swirly, but it seems that no mms is sent. The log says just

SwirlyMMS, version: 0.2.2 started at: 2008-02-19 14:58:30 +0100

And the image is downscaled, and waits in tmp.jpg. Is there anything I missed?

Versions and stuff: iPhone 1.1.3 otb, jb/ul with ziphone. fw 04.03.13_G.

Posted by carnil 2008-02-19 13:26:26

lonnie: some permissions shoud be changed chmod +s for app file and chown root:wheel for directory and SwirllyMMS is working fine.

Posted by uksteve 2008-02-18 21:10:27

Guys, ive just transferred all of my photos from the photo library onto the camera roll with iphone pc suite, so i can send any pic from my phone now....try it

Posted by Sortilege 2008-02-18 17:45:56

Yes, i dont want 0.3 delayed, but it will be great to send things from the phone and not just the roll, also sending video and audio clips will be great. I know you have heard these sugestions and that once this is a full app it will have all of that. Keep up the good work guys.

Posted by lonnie 2008-02-18 01:38:30

Something for future versions, not 0.3 because I don't want to delay it (I want it now!) :) .. the ability to select any photo, not just what is in the photo roll .. I know that's not simple because those are stored differently .. but it would be nice to be able to send something I sync'ed from my computer as well.

when... when.. when...? :)

Posted by Mats B 2008-02-16 22:31:02

Mike: it will be possible to receive both audio and video files. There are a few things with this though:
1) you must have a viewer installed that can show the particular video or play the audio
2) the mime type / content type must be supported by SwirlyMMS. Currently we support the following mime types:
{"image/jpeg", "jpg"},
{"image/jpg", "jpg"},
{"image/png", "png"},
{"image/gif", "gif"},
{"image/tiff", "tiff"},
{"image/bmp", "bmp"},
{"audio/asf", "asf"},
{"audio/mpg", "mp3"},
{"audio/mpeg", "mp3"},
{"audio/mpeg3", "mp3"},
{"audio/mpg3", "mp3"},
{"audio/mp3", "mp3"},
{"audio/amr", "amr"},
{"audio/aac", "aac"},
{"audio/3gp", "3gp"},
{"audio/3gpp", "3gp"},
{"audio/midi", "midi"},
{"audio/mid", "midi"},
{"audio/x-wav", "wav"},
{"audio/wma", "wma"},
{"audio/x-pn-realaudio", "ram"},
{"video/wmv", "wmv"},
{"video/mpeg4", "mp4"},
{"video/asf", "asf"},
{"video/3gp", "3gp"},
{"video/3gpp", "3gp"},
{"video/quicktime", "mov"},

a little while after posting i stopped recieving the error and it works just fine again...probably just something with cingular! thanks!

Posted by lonnie 2008-02-16 21:18:35

That would explain it then .. I used nate's method the day it came out .. I later used zipphone only to fix my no signal issue when I upgraded my baseband .. I'm glad I did that by the way, the triangulation may not be perfect but it's fun .. Yeah my BL3.9 and 04.03.13_G .. it's nice :)

Posted by Mike 2008-02-16 19:21:10

when is v0.3 gonna be released I will happily donate $20 to $30 for it I wonder if it can receive video messages

Posted by hermitman 2008-02-16 18:24:21

OH,yes, lucky dog! you got an bl3.9. sorry I didn`t take that into consideration, course i`m still wait geohot give the new bl4.6.

Posted by JP 2008-02-16 18:03:33

lonnie - yours is running without modification because you used nates method. His jailbreak does not change the root access to mobile like it is supposed to. if anyone has upgraded with the dev method, or legit through itunes then used the new ziphone "real" jailbreak method then they are running from the mobile directory. You can still use the app (mine works fine), but you need to change the permissions.

Posted by Patrick 2008-02-16 18:03:24

Actually, if I read the process of the ziphone tool, it will unlock and use a 04.03.13_G baseband (from FW 1.1.3) if your phone is currently 3.9 bootloader.  If your phone was BL4.6, the tool puts a BL3.9 on the device, but has to use the 4.02.13_G baseband (from 1.1.2).  (Personally, I am on a BL3.9 phone, running 1.1.3 upgraded with NateTrue's method, so I have baseband 4.02.13_G, but SwirlyMMS is running fine for me.)

Posted by hermitman 2008-02-16 16:52:51

So, your phone is not cracked? or you use 877? because now, the ziphone or gunlock, must use the baseband of 1.1.2(if there is no new update:) ).

Posted by lonnie 2008-02-16 16:04:40

for science! .. jk .. I upgraded my baseband using a baseband updater app then I ran zip phone to fix my no signal issue .. now I'm on a 1.1.3 phone with the 04.03.13_G firmware and ... it still works for me :( sorry .. the plus side is now works for me also! .. I should be current everything .. it's an iphonesimfree phone with the latest software

Posted by lonnie 2008-02-16 15:22:23

1.1.3 (nate true) with 04.01.13_G .. maybe the modem firmware is the difference ..

Posted by ferrarif1 2008-02-16 13:25:27

lonnie - what firmware are you running? Because i am running 1.1.3 with 04.03.13_G Firmware and it doesnt work for me. It just opens and then closes.

Posted by lonnie 2008-02-16 00:27:33

carnil - how did it fail? I'm running it on 1.1.3 just fine.,.

Posted by lonnie 2008-02-16 00:26:38

Appreciate the update guys! it's always nice to at least have some idea things are still moving :) by the way.. how many people would still be running 1.02? the legit phones are surely updated, and can't run third party apps anyway.. and those who are gutsy enough to jailbreak their handsets are probably at least running 1.1.1 by now I'd think .. my guess is that 1.1.1, 1.1.2 and 1.1.3 are the core audience.

Posted by carnil 2008-02-15 20:10:48

I tried 0.2.2 on 1.1.3 but I failed. Looking forward for 0.3 and I'll donate for the team.

Reasonably soon anyway ;) Tommy is currently rebulding his tool-chain on a new computer.

Posted by albert 2008-02-15 13:10:16

does this mean that .3's release is very very soon?

Posted by Mats B 2008-02-15 09:54:36

As some kind of explanation why the 0.3 release is taking a bit longer than initially planned is that we try to make it also to work on 1.1.3. Therefore we had to upgrade our phones and also make some changes to make it fit both 1.0.2,1.1.1,1.1.2 and 1.1.3. Then, as if this wasn't enough, tommy had a crash on his development computer :( But anyhow, we now have it up and running also on a 1.1.3 phone :)

swirlyswirls: my suggestion is to call your operator. service denied usually have something to do with either your contract or that they are doing some kind of service on their equipment.

Anyone else start having trouble today with cingular? Been using SwirlyMMS for quite some time but now I am getting an error saying

"Failed to send MMS: The network reported: service denied"

Posted by Paul 2008-02-14 18:53:55

I'm on O2 uk, and has similar problems yesterday. Eventually it worked.
My settings are as follows:-

MMSC: mmsc.mms.o2.co.uk:8002
Proxy: 193.113.200.195:8080

APN: wap.o2.co.uk (for Contract/Simplicity)
Username: o2wap
Password: password

For PAYG it's:- (I think)
APN: payandgo.o2.co.uk
Username: payandgo

Hope this helps ;o)

hi, i am trying to send mms on o2 uk but each time i try, i get an error message saying that it can't connect to proxy (connect failed). Looking through this forum, it doesn't seem like anyone else is having this problem. I could send an MMS fine before I upgraded swirlymms to 0.2.2 although it seems after I upgraded it, it didn't work anymore for me. I am still on 1.1.2. Do I have to upgrade for it to work? Is it possible to go back to the old version of swirlymms otherwise?

Posted by hermitman 2008-02-14 09:32:24

yeah, hurry up, i cannot wait any more! good luck...........:)

Posted by lonnie 2008-02-13 18:55:05

my iphone has been dead for a couple weeks with a busted screen, once I got the parts and had the time to sit down and get the thing fixed .. (brand new screen!) .. I thought for sure 0.3 would be out .. sadly no .. I got spoiled on MMS the last two weeks with my crappy motorola v340 :) I might die soon

Thanks RR, that tip worked for me on my 1.1.3 (dev).

Posted by Mats B 2008-02-10 17:34:12

BTW all you 1.1.3 users. Could someone please mail a copy of /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.CommCenter.plist to mats AT swirlyspace.com

We would like to verify that it looks the same as in 1.1.1 etc

/MB

Posted by Mats B 2008-02-10 17:22:05

Your 1.1.3 progress sounds as good news. We will try to get 0.3 to work oob on 1.1.3 but since we currently dont have any 1.1.3 to try on .....

/MB

Posted by RR 2008-02-10 11:54:58

For those who this method didn't work on 1.1.3 try this....

cd /Applications
chmod +s SwirlyMMS.app/SwirlyMMS
chown root:wheel SwirlyMMS.app

This worked for me...still looking forward to 0.3..Keep up the good work

Posted by JP 2008-02-10 09:08:17

I managed to get the app working on my 1.1.3 (dev team method). I simply changed the permission on the SwirlyMMS file inside of /Applications/SwirlyMMS.app to 4755. Once I did that all the settings saved without crashing, and I sucessfully sent a pic message to my email. Hope that helps others with the same problem.

Posted by Mats B 2008-02-06 10:30:01

JP: I assume you are running 1.1.3?? If not, then go into /var/root/Library/MMSApp and remove the files there. If you are running 1.1.3 then this problem is due to that native apps are not running as root anymore but as the user "mobile". This leads to that the app cannot access files in /var/root/.....

My mms app opens fine, turns off wifi...etc. Only problem is it wont save settings. I can enter the menu and type all the settings, but as soon as I press save it crashes to springboard. If I go into settings but press cancel it acts normally and brings me back to the main menu. Only thing it doesn't like is the save button.

thanks for the quick responses MB! Wondering, were you able to polish the gui at all?

Posted by Mats B 2008-02-05 16:16:42

No I'm sorry. It will only allow sending from camera roll and no sound :(. BUT you will/should be able to receive sound etc if that helps :)

0.3 will support from 1.0.2 -> 1.1.3

Thanks Mats. I have not tried the tip, but my 1.1.3 froze my phone so i downgraded back to 1.1.2 untill the newer one has been around awhile. Cant wait till your new version comes out. Will it have the ability to send picts from other than the roll? And will you be able to send audio clips?

Posted by Tommy 2008-02-05 14:16:33

Hej!

Posted by albert 2008-02-05 12:53:21

so is the future versions of swirlys going to only work with 1.1.3 or will it also work with 1.1.1?

Posted by Mats B 2008-02-05 11:14:31

As I have said earlier we have not tried our app on 1.1.3. Now after reading about the jailbreak of 1.1.3 I understand that the current version of SwirlyMMS will probably NOT work with the dev teams jailbreak. It seems more likely that it will work with Nate True jailbreak (anyway until he "corrects" it to work like the dev teams). We will try to make the next version to work with also the dev teams jailbreak.

@lonnie - that is exacly why I did not donate yet.
I will donate as soon as we will have full working version ;)

I updated 1.1.3 and installed swirlymms again. first time it allowed me to enter my settings but then whenever i launch it now it just closes and returns me to my home screen. anyone els having this problem??

Posted by lonnie 2008-02-01 02:13:38

If that's true, then folks like myself who already donated wouldn't be very happy .. I donated because it was a free app and I wanted to show my support, if they in turn make it a pay app via iTunes, great .. but it'd suck to make those who donated .. also buy it.. granted it's all speculation, but I think the best thing would be at least to update the blog and let people know they're alive ..

Posted by JOn 2008-01-31 11:22:10

There's only two Apps I'm eagerly waiting for, this one 0.3 SwirlyMMS, and Druknbass's Video Recorder. Both very quiet at the moment, on estimated release dates, and since SDK is just around the corner, I wouldn't be suprised (and wouldn't blame them) if they developed it via that, and released them as official Apps via iTunes instead of free.

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong guys, and keep us "in the loop" so to speak

Posted by razvan 2008-01-31 06:09:17

nevermind, I got them!

Posted by albert 2008-01-30 20:55:54

i agree with lonnie. its been real quiet. Is it almost complete? I remember it took quite a while for .2 to come out. I hope its not going to be the same with .3. I wouldnt know what to do then lol.

Posted by Jon 2008-01-30 20:22:20

No word in 21 days, perhaps waiting for official SDK release ??

Posted by Paul 2008-01-30 15:59:53

It works on 1.1.3 (Nate True) method, but only after I made disk space available. I was down to less than 4MB and MMS crashes soon after the splash screen.
I've since moved all Apps to /media partition (using Boss Tool), now it works fine.

Posted by jesus 2008-01-30 15:14:40

Has anybody have it working on 1.1.3 dev team? Mine crashes all the time any ideas?

Posted by lonnie 2008-01-29 17:39:07

It's been pretty quiet on the MMS front lately .. no word in like 19-20 days :)

Posted by Sortilege 2008-01-28 22:11:43

I was wondering if on a future version that we will also be able to send audio clips, and maybe animated messages, and pictures other than the ones on the camera roll?? By the way, finally got a message to go out on my phone. ;-)

Posted by Patrick 2008-01-26 09:35:02

Again, like the others I can't wait until we have receiving support for MMS. However, I do want to add that SwirlyMMS is working on a jailbroken and unlocked 1.1.3 (baseband version 04.02.13_G) on T-Mobile USA.
(However, there does exist a problem where sent photos are very small on all receiving handsets. 3 requests for a future version: 1) Viewing of sent MMSes, 2) Sending to multiple recipients & 3) Selection of photos from an album other than Camera Roll.  Thank you again for all your hard work.)

Posted by Jon Davis 2008-01-24 18:55:33

Posted by uksteve 2008-01-22 11:13:43

mats, just an update.

ive sent to various phones on different networks and they all get the mms ok. The problem is the wifes phone i reckon for sure.

Dying in anticipation for the next version...

Posted by emily 2008-01-22 02:32:06

thank you for all your hard work. can't wait until 0.3!!

Posted by uksteve 2008-01-20 23:19:16

yes mats, i did. thanks for letting me know.

i wonder whats up? ive tried forwarding on the pic from the phone that did receive it, to the original one that didnt to see if it gets thru ok that way or to see if the problem might really be the wifes phone...

Posted by mats 2008-01-20 21:57:19

no, normally it is possible to send MMS through networks. It usually takes a little bit longer. Anyhow, since the receiving phone says it cannot download for some reason it seems that the MMS is there but cannot be downloaded. I cannot say why. Did you send me an email? If you did it came here :) thanks, and I could see the pic.

Posted by uksteve 2008-01-20 21:48:30

ive sent the pic to another phone on the same network as myself and it came thru ok,immediately...so im getting somewhere now.

does this mean that mms cant be sent cross network?

Posted by uksteve 2008-01-20 21:37:40

...well, the receiving phone said "Error, unable to download" 24.1kb

Posted by uksteve 2008-01-20 21:26:59

matsb, i actually took the original pic with CameraPro app. Ive took another with the standard iphone camera and sent it on the medium setting...an hour later and it still hasnt been received.

Ill post again with the result when it eventually comes thru

Posted by SvTommy 2008-01-20 11:40:16

Helt fantastiskt vad ni har jobbat bra nu. Ni ska ha en stor eloge till att ha fixat detta program som enligt mig är det som mest behövdes utan tveken. Vill helt enkelt bara tacka er för ett fantastiskt jobb!

Posted by mats 2008-01-20 10:20:24

uksteve: ok, I will try myself with a picture of size 400x300 and send it with medium setting. Regarding these settings: the medimum one which says that the size will be about 100k. This is true when sending a "normal" picture from the iphone camera of size 1600x1200. The medium setting will divide the width and height by 4 so in this particular case it would result in a 100x75 sized pic.

Anyhow, the quality setting is kind of relative and the quality descrptions are only valid when the source is 1600x1200. We should probably change this in the future.

regards, Mats B

Posted by uksteve 2008-01-20 03:48:27

matsb, im afraid after the pic(which i took specifically knowing it was under the 100kb limit) didnt send, i deleted it...so i obviously cant email it on, sorry

uksteve again: could you also try to send the 42kb MMS to my email address:
mats AT swirlyspace.com . You have to type the email address manually in the to field when composing the MMS.
regards, Mats

uksteve: can you post the log content (found in ~/Library/MMSApp/logfile.txt) after such a failed send attempt.

haha I'm chill, just anxious! .. this is the coolest and only app I've wanted on my iPhone since I got it :)

Ive tried sending a 42kb sized photo on the Medium(100kb)setting. When the mms is received on the other phone an error screen opens saying "Cannot read file"

Anyone got any ideas whats up?

Im on Vodafone UK and trying to send the MMS to O2 UK if that makes any difference.

give them hell T-bone ;)

Got it working on O2 in the UK using the settings on the page provided (but APN settings of mobile.o2.co.uk, username: mobileweb, password: password), amazing! it's the only thing my mates have been baiting me about that this phone doesn't have - now i can rub it in their face!

Thankyou!!

delete the directories ~Library/MMSApp and /Applications/SwirlyMMS.app

After that everything is wiped out.

got the same problem as albert with the history deletion, same on save, takes a long time to save settings. Its a updated app from 0.1 -> 0.2

so I wonder, how do I wipe the whole program efter unistall? so I get a clean one ;)

which folders to delete? thnx alot !

To Albert: its a very strange problem you have.

Verify that you really have write permission on ~/Library/MMSApp.

well i can confirm that the update is on installer, so far so good. Only problem would be that i still cant clear my history. When i click clear, it would temporarily go away until next time i start the program where it comes back. I tried clicking clear then save, still didnt work, then tried clear then cancel, same result. Other then that thanks Swirly!!! Cant wait for the next release!

same here. I was excited for the update 2.1 but it never showed up on installer. Hey Tommy, what exactly was the bug that was causing problems for everyone?

hahaha, chill down lonnie :-)

Also, this update as well as the last update do not appear on ste, so hopefully 0.3 doesn't get released and take a week or a month to trickle out :) I'll set up my own repository if that happens! :)

Every time I see a new post I get all excited and then realize, it's not 0.3 .. drat!
