The "m" doesnt turn green

What does the green 'm' signify?

The green M signifies that swirlymms has connected to the GPRS network (the apn specified in settings) sucessfully and has received an IP address.

Is the M supposed to go away when you switch to another application?

Ok, so that works. But what about receiving MMS then? Do i need to keep my application open and not use my phone for anything else so i can receive MMS?
Excuse my stupidity but i'm new to SwirlyMMS AND to the iPhone.

"Receive MMS" consists of two parts. The first part is: receiving a notification that you have an MMS. For this to work, you don't have to do anything special at all, like running the SwirlyMMS application, it all happens under-the-hood.
The second part is: fetching the MMS. To do this, you must actively run the SwirlyMMS application and press the Fetch button. For this to work, the "m" must have turned green.
