Here is what SwirlySpace should have done. (I don't care if they are two guys in a basement or 10000 guys in San Francisco skyscrapers)
1. Made a version of 1.x or 2.x that was compatible with iPhone 3.0 - but had no new features. Sold this version for $1 upgrade fee for existing users. I don't care which codebase it uses, probably using the 2.x codebase would be easier for the devs. So essentially a 2.1 "lite" with none of the added BS built in. But whatever - give us previous customers an upgrade path where we don't feel like we are being gouged.
2. Made 2.1 with all the fancy features only a $6 upgrade, so as to not make previous customers pay more than new customers.
That is it. There is no excuse for poor customer service, and there is no excuse for gouging your existing customers. Presumably, some time, SwirlySpace will want to release some other software. And while we may be stuck with SwirlyMMS, we will remember how crappy Swirly was, and avoid any future products.
If they, as developers, want to release a product and charge for it - then they need to be prepared to take the heat from customers. That is true of ANY business, large or small. But if they want to use the "we are just two guys in our spare time" defense - then they need to charge less for their app, or open source it and give it away.
As it stands now, Swirly has lost my money. I won't even bother to upgrade. I will wait for someone to hack the iPhone 3.0 OS to support MMS on the 2G iphone, or maybe by that time I will have enough money to buy a new iPhone.
It is not the $6. It is the principle of the thing...
