Today we cannot say when this will be finished, so yes, you will have to wait and wait and wait. ;-) But hopefully not too long...

And yes, Cydia will definitely be used for the distribution. Installer too if it gets ported over... As far as I know there are not too many apps, besides numerous command-line utilities from Erica and the command-line tools that comes bundled with Cydia, available in Cydia yet. So if you are interested in the good-old 3rd party apps you should wait a little longer before you upgrade.

From what I've been reading lately there's a few approaches to porting.. one would be to port over fully to the 2.0 toolchain which requires renaming a bunch of functions essentially, as well as dealing with the way apple changed the keyboard behaviors.. then there is the compatability chain which allows you to compile your code pretty much as it is .. but that may not work in future 2.0 releases..

Using the compatability libraries (found in Cydia) .. you could compile a 2.0 release quickly while working on a full 2.0 port later on ..

I realize we're still looking at a couple of weeks before we'll see it, but using the compatability libraries it might lessen the initial effort.

We are of course following the development of the new toolchain and the various options there are to build and port apps for 2.0 very, very closely! Once our vacations are over (yes, we have actually taken a few days off, sort of..., with our families after a very busy 2008), we will focus on a release for 2.0.

so if I update to 2.0 (which I haven't) you will eventually release a compatible version of SwirlyMMS?
I just dont want to update and not be able to use MMS ever again... :(

Please confirm, thanks!

There's a lot more to getting an app to run on 2.0 than getting it on Cydia. Cydia is just the distribution tool, allowing a unified repository collection based on debian-APT.
Basically, that means they have to do a significant amount of reprogramming to get Swirly to work on 2.0. And when they do, we will again be super-grateful b/c it's easily the most useful iPhone app to date. (IMO)

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't curious myself ..

Last I read, the core functionality was ported and all that was left was to port the GUI elements.. but that was a couple of days ago

I use MMS capabilities with my job, I upgraded to 2.0 thinking the port would come much quicker (my own faulty assumption) .. but the only reason I don't downgrade is because I just have this fear that the moment I get back to 1.1.4, the 2.0 MMS will come out :)

Besides.. already purchased a few apps that I find immensely useful.. especially some of the fitness related stuff, Absolute Fitness is nifty!

finally swirly is a very good toy for the iphone.

in the meantime, all "key applications" has been released for 2.0, at least in a working public beta. unfortunately there is nothing from swirly :-(

personally i gave up waiting and i have migrated to 2.0.1 (works perfect!).

probably one day mms is running again on my iphone, probably with swirly and i will have benefit from the $ i've paid for it!

nevertheless, many thanks to the swirly team, great job! and all this besides fulltime jobs and hobbies.
