Swirly thoughts on iPhone 3G, fimware 2.0 and App Store...

Best Swirly Users,

as most, if not all, of you already know, on July 11th, Apple will release iPhone 3G and a new firmware version 2.0 together with an App Store. Some of you will buy the new 3G model and some will keep the iPhone you already have and maybe do an upgrade of the firmware. What follows is our take on this happening.

As the case has always been, if you have a jailbroken iPhone, which you have if you are a SwirlyMMS user, wait with the firmware upgrade until 2.0 has been jailbroken! When that will happen is impossible for us to say, we all need to wait and see, maybe here or here

In addition to the normal wait-before-firmware-upgrade disclaimer, if you are dependant on MMS we advice you to wait with the firmware upgrade until we confirm that SwirlyMMS is functioning properly on 2.0! The SwirlyMMS v1.x full license for iPhone firmware 1.x will be valid on your old iPhone device running the new 2.0 firmware. As of today, we cannot give you a date when SwirlyMMS will run on 2.0 but we will try to make a release as soon as possible.

Regarding the official App Store, you will not find SwirlyMMS in it. At least not for a while… Time will tell if you ever will find it there.

Stay tuned!

Regards,
The Swirly Team

Why will not SwirlyMMS be sold through app store?! Due to an Apple Policy, or what?!

yes. We cannot fit our app in the requirements Apple has set. Could change of course in the future but currently it is not possible.

I just hope you will use a bit time on making it AppStore compatible, since some of us cant use jailbreak phones. Were doing official app development and need to test that it actually works on phones that is not jailbroken ;) .... And MMS is quite nice to have :D

Its a great application and when you are non jailbroken hw2.0 compatible I would gladly pay $20 for the app, without blinking even.

WOW, $20. I dunno Mats, that sounds a little too good to pass up!

On a more serious note, the app store wouldn't allow SwirlyMMS due to the fact that it runs in the background. And I'm not too sure that Apple's push notification server would work; it seems more IM related.

This will not likely ever happen .. apps in the appstore do not get unfettered access to the phone's internet connection, this means that apps must go through apple and then to the internet and back .. According to Apple, this is because it means the phone only has to maintain one active connection for all apps and therefore it conserves battery life ..

SwirlyMMS cannot function with this requirement in place because it must use the cell network's connection and connect directly to the mmsc/proxy server .. not to mention, it runs in the background .. another no no

In short..

It won't work .. and I don't see Apple letting that restriction go any time soon.. they want to maintain control over the traffic caused by apps .. short and simple.. this very point is why Jobs didn't want third party apps in the first place, he said something about a badly written app could take down the cell network .. this was Apple's solution... which hinders Swirly ..

detailed explaination :)

Can you maybe try to port Swirly to work with Cydia installer? It works with 2.0 so maybe you can do something and we all can test the app under 2.0..Just a thought..:)
