you are correct that 3gp is THE format for vids on phones but as the iphone has no support we have not had time to add support for 3gp. We will in future versions of course. Have you seen the vlc package for iphone. It is huge!!!

Exactly .. and I already knew swirly wasn't going to be supporting 3gp based on being unable to play the example I sent Mats.. so this is why I became a tester of vlc4iphone .. when someone sends you a video .. save the video to the vlc media folder, then launch the app and it plays them fine ..

The first public release of vlc4iphone does not play them very well at ALL .. but the current beta, which I imagine will be out soon.. plays them wonderfully for me.

I just checked Installer and lo and behold, SwirlyMMS 1.0.0 was available on the swirly source. It does NOT fix the issues for ATT USA but I am just about to call them and follow mbwna's instructions. I will update after thats done. Thanks so much Tommy and Mats!
