Update, and I feel daft... but someone else may make the same error - in the settings, general tab, you need to have 3g enabled (i know, i know obvious really) and apparently it helps not to have the wifi on as well. and yes
I have now sent and received MMS !!!
YIPEEE !!!

I have just tried to get O2 to activate MMS and they insist its not compatable with the iPhone, when I explained that other people have had it activated in order to use a different phone they just said its impossible on an iPhone tarriff

Simon,

Dont give up ! the first operator I called gave me exactly that line. I redialled two minutes later and the next operator did it, I stated as the chap did above I use the sim card in another phone at weekends. an MMS "costs" 4 text messages. It Can be done !!!!!

I called O2 from a different handset and they agreed to activated the MMS and even resent the settings but when I tried again in the iPhone still cant receive MMS but can send. I just rang them again and they are incistant that on an iPhone tarriff there isnt the provision for MMS to be activated and not likely to be anytime soon.

Thanks Apple for being crap

I can assure you all that the o2 operator that you speak to will have a tick box option in front of them (on your account) called 'lift MMS bar' (or similar).

Once this box is ticked then the bar is lifted from the iPhone tariff, thus enabling you to send and receive MMS through your iphone.

I actually had quite a lengthly chat with the operator and this was explained to me.

I cannot stress enough that you need to keep on calling until you get a helpful o2 operator that knows what they are talking about.

It does work... I promise :D

simonsjames wrote:Hi chaps, thanks for the posts, very helpful, and I can echo the call up more than once routine, the first operator was insistant it was not possible, the next call and the operatord just said "sure" its done !. I may be impatient, (after readin that it can happen in 20 minutes !) but am currently getting swirly saying :

"FAILIURE
You dont have an active GPRS/EDGE/3G connection for the
moment! This can be due to a
temporary problem in the network or
thet your APN settings are incorrect.
Please verify your APN settings
on the Settings page"

i am hoping this is just because it hasnt been ectivated yet - 45 minutes lol, and on a Sunday evening at 6pm, so Ill give it the 24 hours the operator mentioned..

If you get this I think it's because the 'm' at the top of the screen is not yet active (green). Let the 'm' turn green before you try and send and it should work

Ok, I have just finished my seventh call to o2!! If that's not persistence I don't know what is! I have used all the excuses used here and even some new ones, once I actually told them the true reason I wanted it, no joy!!

"Sorry but as you are on an iPhone tariff there is no provision for this."

One guy did however tell me that it would be possible if I had bought an iPhone second hand and was using a normal sim card.

Could someone please sweet talk someone at o2 who has activated this for them and get there full name or something.
