With all the posts back and forth and some members saying not so nice things about others, I thought I'd post my experiences with getting Switly to work with ATT. It has been an on and off effort over the last month or so, but I have now survived a nightly sweep (I hope) and Swirly is still working.
What I did to get it to work:
Inspired by other posters (and frustrated after having tried a million other things), I put my SIM in my old phone and started using the Internet a little. After an hour or so, I checked my account on ATT and "My Phone" had indeed changed back to my old phone (apparently, ATT picks up your phone type from your usage now). I tried to send MMS from the old phone, but no go. However, since the phone had changed on my account, I now had the option to add the plain 200 Msg plan (which includes MMS) for an extra $5 per month. I went ahead and did this and tried MMS again on the old phone. This time it worked. I then popped the SIM back in my iPhone (not 3G) and Swirly started working with the usual settings:
Image size: Maximum (takes forever with that setting on...)
Since I have had Swirly working in the past, only to get it killed by the nightly sweep, I'm cautiously excited now that a night has passed and it's still working.
What I have done leading up to this:
I've pretty much tried everything I could find in any post. Initially, I got Swirly working by speaking with iPhone support (not the plain support) and having them enable MMS. However, that only lasted to the nightly sweep.
I've also activated a MobileMe account to ensure WAP push was activated, but I don't think this was a crucial step since it worked the one day long before I did this.
So - like others - I believe the magic lies in having a non-iPhone msg service on your account. That explains why people with Family accounts as well as people with the standard msg service added (Me) are able to get it to work, but people with "just" iPhone messaging can't. It's possible the step I took last month to have MMS enabled on the account also helped, but I'm not sure about this since the changes seemed to be turned off over night.
So - in short - try this:
- Put SIM in old phone
Use internet / MMS (MMS should fail)
Keep checking your ATT account online (I think you have to log out and back in for the phone type to refresh)
When your phone changes to your old phone, add 200 Standard Msg plan ($5 monthly) to your account
Try MMS on old phone (should work within minutes - reboot may be necessary)
When MMS works on old phone, put SIM back in iPhone
Try Swirly on iPhone
Good luck and fingers crossed to all.
